What “Home Is the Key” Really Means for Families in Summit and Wasatch Counties

Every April, Habitat for Humanity launches its Home Is the Key campaign, grounded in the belief that everyone deserves the security and stability of a home they can afford. Home should be a place to gather with family and friends, watch children grow, and make memories to last a lifetime. But for too many families in Summit and Wasatch counties, that kind of home is out of reach.

The Home Is the Key campaign draws on the strength of our community to help more local families access affordable housing. A stable home is a foundation that can free a family from financial instability, reduce daily stress, and prevent impossible choices between essential needs. That is the gap Habitat for Humanity's Home Is the Key campaign was built to close.

A Campaign with a Clear Purpose
Launched in 2017 as a national effort to focus public attention on the need for affordable housing, the Home Is the Key campaign brings communities together around one of the most basic human needs: a safe, long-term place to call home.

Home is the foundation for starting a better future, and Habitat’s work helps families create strength, stability, and self-reliance through homeownership. Read Habitat’s success stories to find out what homeownership can do for a family. The sense of security, accomplishment, pride, and self-worth that owning a home brings radiates outward from homeowners to their children, neighbors, and, more broadly, their community.

Home Is the Key to Better Outcomes for Families
Research shows that stable housing can change a family’s trajectory. Children in stable homes attend school more regularly, get better grades, and are more likely to complete high school and pursue higher education. Adult homeowners report lower stress and anxiety, along with better physical health. Moving from housing instability into a secure home with predictable housing costs also helps families budget more effectively and set aside money for education and health needs.

Without a stable home, the risk of chronic illness, mental illness, and homelessness increases. But in a stable home, families put down roots, build stronger relationships with neighbors, contribute locally, and establish a financial foundation that they can carry forward to future generations. A Habitat home is the starting point for the strength, stability, and self-reliance that are at the core of Habitat’s mission.
