The Importance of Having a Place to Call Home

The Importance of Having a Place to Call Home

Having a place to call home is an idea that many of us take for granted. But for many families, it’s a dream that seems almost impossible.

Enter Habitat for Humanity Summit and Wasatch Counties, which is committed to providing affordable housing to families who live, work, go to school, and call these communities home.

Our nonprofit organization is dedicated to building homes and communities in partnership with families who are looking for a permanent place to call home. In this article, we explore why having a place to call home is so important and how it impacts local communities and the lives of families who live there.

Better Housing Leads to a Better Life

Everyone should have access to safe, stable, and affordable housing, regardless of income level, race, ethnicity, gender, or other factors. Sadly, this is not the reality for everyone.

Habitat for Humanity seeks to address this gap by partnering with families to provide a place to call home and thereby investing in their homes, their communities, and their futures.

Studies have shown that better housing leads to better health outcomes, as families are less likely to suffer from respiratory illnesses, injuries, or stress-related conditions. Better housing also leads to better education outcomes for children, as they are more likely to attend school regularly, perform better academically, and have higher aspirations for their future. Finally, better housing leads to better economic outcomes, as families are more likely to be stably employed, start small businesses, and contribute to their local economies.

Community-Minded Living

Habitat for Humanity’s impact extends beyond the individual family that benefits from a new home because our mission goes beyond building homes. We believe in a holistic approach that recognizes the importance of building strong, resilient communities where residents live, work, learn, and play. We partner with families to not only build homes and lives but also to create vibrant and inclusive communities where everyone supports local businesses, enjoys gathering in public spaces, and engages in community-driven activities to the benefit of all residents.

Moreover, Habitat for Humanity’s work has a multiplier effect on the broader economy, because it creates jobs and stimulates economic activity. This ripple effect can transform entire communities for the better.

How to Help Build a Place to Call Home

The need for safe, decent, and affordable housing is more urgent than ever as home prices in Summit and Wasatch Counties continue to rise. Post-pandemic life has underscored the critical importance of having a stable and healthy home in which to live, work, and learn in.

There are several ways you can help Habitat for Humanity’s mission. Shop at Park City ReStore for all your home needs, or donate your new or gently used items to help others make their house feel like a home. You can also donate your car or recreational vehicle that no longer fits your lifestyle.

By building and improving homes, creating strong and resilient communities, and empowering families to improve their own lives, Habitat for Humanity is building a better future for us all. As supporters of Habitat for Humanity, we can all be part of this important mission and work toward a world where everyone has a place to call home.
