How You Can Help Local Families in Need of Affordable Housing this Holiday Season

The holiday season is a time of giving and sharing, and while many of us focus on buying presents for loved ones and indulging in holiday treats, it’s important to remember that there are families in our community who would love nothing more than to be celebrating in a home they can call their own.

Affordable housing is a basic need that many families in Summit and Wasatch Counties simply cannot afford. Yet, studies show that the overarching impact of a safe and healthy home on the overall health and stability of families is tremendous. Together, with the help of the community and our mission to build homes and hope so that everyone has a decent place to live, we can all come together to make a difference. Let’s explore how you can help local families in need of affordable housing this season.

Make a Year-end Donation

The simplest and most effective way to help families in Summit and Wasatch Counties is by making a financial contribution to Habitat for Humanity’s Homeownership Program. Every dollar makes a difference and goes towards building homes for families in the local workforce. Think of it as an investment in your own community and the workforce that supports it. Whether you’d like to make a one-time donation or a monthly gift, your contribution will help build homes for families in your community.

Donate, Shop, and Volunteer at ReStore

If you’re unable to donate money, you can still make an impact by donating home goods, furniture, and building supplies to the Park City ReStore. Construction materials and equipment, artwork, appliances, and more are then resold to the community, with proceeds directly furthering Habitat’s mission. And you yourself can shop there too—whether for holiday gifts or to freshen your own home after the holidays.

Aside from the savings, shopping at ReStore diverts more than 620 tons of waste from landfills—saving both money and the environment!

If you have free time and want to take a more hands-on approach to helping families own their own homes, Habitat has many volunteer opportunities at ReStore, which can help fulfill community service hours for work, school, court orders, or benefits. Volunteering not only makes a direct impact on local families, but it can also be a rewarding experience for you.

Donate Your Car or Recreational Vehicle

The Cars for Homes program is a win/win for everyone. Using the online donation wizard or toll-free hotline, you can easily give your car, truck, RV, van, SUV, motorcycle, snowmobile, boat, or other motorized vehicle to Habitat and receive a tax deduction in exchange. Running or non-running vehicles are both acceptable, and towing is free.

Best of all, when you donate a car, truck, boat, RV, motorcycle (and more), your tax-deductible donation goes directly to help construct homes in Summit and Wasatch Counties. All net proceeds from the sale of your vehicle will support local families and the affordable housing program here in the Summit and Wasatch communities.

Spread the Word

One of the easiest ways to help families in need of affordable housing in the Wasatch Back is simply by raising awareness about Habitat for Humanity’s work locally. Share our social media posts, tell your friends and family about the ReStore and the importance of affordable housing, and encourage others to support the Homeownership Program. The more people who know about our vision and the work Habitat is doing, the greater the impact we can make together.

Let’s Build Together in 2024

As we work together to build a better future for those in Summit and Wasatch Counties by building and improving homes, creating strong and resilient communities, and empowering families to improve their own lives, we are making a transformational impact.

Whether you choose to help through a financial donation, volunteer your time, donate your car,  shop at ReStore, or spread the word about our efforts, you are making a difference in the lives of local families. Together, we can build safe and affordable housing for families to call home and make this a happier holiday season for all.
